The Haliburton County Community COVID-19 Assessment Centre is also reporting the positivity rate for Variants of Concern. These variants, first identified in the United Kingdom in late November 2020, in South Africa at the end of December 2020, and in Brazil in January 2021, have been identified as posing possible new risks to people due to high rates of transmission, more severe illness and increased risk of reinfection. All three variants have been identified in Ontario, with cases believed to be linked to both travel-related and community transmission. While information about these variants is still emerging, evidence has indicated that they are more easily spread between people and have more severe symptoms with an increased risk of hospitalization.
