Haliburton, ON – [October 20, 2025] — Haliburton Highlands Health Services (HHHS) is pleased to welcome local high school co-operative education students as part of its ongoing commitment to cultivating partnerships to strengthen care delivery.
This year, HHHS will host up to four co-op students, each spending two hours a day, five days a week, rotating through various hospital departments on a set schedule. Students will not repeat a department two days in a row, ensuring a well-rounded and dynamic learning experience.
Before beginning their placements, students complete a comprehensive orientation that includes training in privacy, occupational health and safety, infection prevention and control, communication, code of conduct, wheelchair safety, and essential healthcare skills. In addition to their department rotations, students will also take part in unique learning opportunities designed to give them a broad understanding of the healthcare environment and the diverse careers within it.
HHHS is thrilled to welcome Elizabeth Mathew (Grade 12) and Sophia Burke (Grade 11) — two bright, motivated students with aspirations to pursue careers in healthcare. Their placements will take them through several key areas, including the Emergency Department, Acute Care, Laboratory, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, Community Programs (such as Meals on Wheels), Diagnostic Imaging, and Hyland Wood Long-Term Care.
“The goal of this initiative is to inspire and empower the next generation of healthcare professionals,” said Jennifer Burns West, Interim President and CEO of HHHS. “By providing meaningful, hands-on experiences, we’re helping students discover their potential and strengthening the future of local care right here in Haliburton County.”
Through the Co-operative Education program, HHHS continues to invest in partnerships that support education, skill development, and the sustainability of healthcare in the community.
